Biography/Personal Statement
Thomas Schadl began piano lessons with his father, Thomas Schadl Sr., at the age of eight years. He also took part at the music talent competition at the Vancouver Hungarian Club in 1972 where he won the first-prize trophy.
After graduating from high school in 1978, he entered Simon Fraser University to pursue studies in mathematics, sciences and geography. Subsequently, he began serving as a volunteer organist at his church in 1979.
From 1982 and onwards, he began serious music studies in piano and organ, which led him to receive three academic achievements: ARCT in piano pedagogy in 1988, where he studied that subject with Mr. Edward Parker (Uncle of John Parker, famous concert pianist). Second, Thomas received the ARCCO level in organ studies with the Royal Canadian College of Organists in 1991, where he studied with Mr. Gordon Atkinson in Vancouver, British Columbia. Finally, he entered the University of British Columbia to study organ performance with Mr. Edward Norman from 1992-1995.
Thomas had continued teaching piano and theory in the Vancouver area until he accepted the post of Organist/Choir Director at Asbury & West United Church in Toronto in 1999. He is currently Organist and Choir Director at Woodbridge United Church in Woodbridge, the position he has accepted in August, 2011.
In addition, Thomas teaches music at various music schools as well as teaching students in their homes. He also gave organ recitals in Toronto.
Additional Information
I teach students from a variety of method books, from Leila Fletcher's Piano Course to the Adventurer's Piano Program, including Alfred Series and other books. Most of my students benefit from Alfred Series and other modern books in that such materials include blues, popular styles and many more genres that help students get more exposure to music outside the classical tradition. In other words, students learn both classical and other styles.
