Allen performs as the big band leader and pianist of his big band
in the San Antonio, Texas area, New York, Houston Texas, and other
areas throughout the United States. His big band consists of a trio
(piano, upright bass, horn) to a 25 piece big band (piano, upright
bass, trumpet, clarinet, three french horns, five saxophones, three
trombones, vibraphone, marimba, fluegal horn, two violins, two cellos,
baritone, drums, and organ). His big band has performed locally
at Sunset Station, The Plaza Club, The Dominion Country Club, Assisted
Living Homes, Mansions, private yard parties, The Embassy Suite
Hotel, and other locations throughout the San Antonio Texas area.
Johnnie Allen's big band specializes in his own original avante
garde compositions and arrangements as well as the standard jazz
favorites by artists such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, George
Gershwin, Bennie Goodman, George Shirley, Stan Kenton, Vernon Duke,
Rafael Hernandez, Bobby Shorte, Frank Sinatra, Jelly Role Morton,
Scott Joplin, Professor Longhair, Allan Toussainte, Fats Waller,
Ella FitzGerald, etc.
